Felt Button Enclosure for the Pocket Piano

Here are some pictures showing how to construct a felt top enclosure for the Pocket Piano Kit.

The enclosure uses felt for the top, and wood on the sides.

The top is made from 1/8" MDF.

The hole guide is taped to the top, and hole centers are marked.

A drill press helps to drill the 1/2" button holes, using a Forstner bit (pictured) really helps.

pcb pic
The Forstner makes it easy to drill holes that are well centered.

The keyboard is just a strip of white felt with black pieces glued on. Be sure to use fabric or felt glue for this.

A simple jig to cut the buttons from 1/2" dowel. They are cut so they protrude slightly from the MDF.

The mounting holes for the piano board go through the top of the MDF, using counter sunk screws.

A spacer is needed. A cut up Bic pen works well for this.

Cutting the sides. Any 1/4" material will do.

pcb pic
The easiest way to glue the sides together is to just tape them with some heavy duty tape.

Some small wood pieces glued to the inside (not shown) support the MDF. Then it is covered with one piece of felt, and finally the key strip is glued on.
